Weekend Word to the Wise (Fighting Jetlag)

You don’t have to travel across the world to feel jet lagged from the travel. I know some people who have a hard time adjusting to a one hour time difference in their personal clocks!

Jet lag occurs when we fly from one time zone to another, usually when we fly in an east-west pattern. Jet lag causes our bodies to basically get out of sync with the natural rhythms to which it is accustom. How well the body falls back into those natural rhythms is basically how well it acclimates to the new environment. Symptoms of jet lag vary per person but the most common symptoms include fatigue, or on the other end of the spectrum, insomnia. Some people also suffer from disorientation and irritability.

Everyone has an idea how to best deal with jet lag. Some people swear by over the counter remedies consisting of combinations of vitamins, minerals, and other natural substances that assist the body in relaxing and acclimating naturally. Other people use melatonin but the Federal Drug Administration has not fully tested melatonin as an aid to reduce or eliminate jet lag.

Some people prefer to get to their destination, get to the hotel and sack out until they feel like waking up. The problem with this solution is that the body is still in its old rhythm and will remain in that rhythm until you nudge it out of there!

Here’s what’s worked for me each time I’ve traveled. Most of these tips are common sense tips but for me, they are tried and true.
